Which UK universities let international students apply without UCAS, and how the direct route works.
Yes. 50 UK universities accept a direct undergraduate application from international students on their own website, without UCAS, and 24 more accept one in some cases. For a master’s degree or a PhD you always apply directly to the university.
A direct application suits you if you have missed the UCAS deadline, want a January start, or have one university in mind. The entry requirements are the same whichever route you take.

No, not if you are an international student. There are four ways into a UK undergraduate degree, and applying directly is often the fastest. For more on studying here, see our guide to studying in the UK.
One application, straight to the university, often free and open well after January.
How it works →Up to five choices in one application. The only route into Oxford, Cambridge and most of the Russell Group.
UCAS help →Still possible after the January deadline, up to 30 June, where courses have places.
Late applications →These universities take a direct undergraduate application from international students on their own website. The cards link to each university’s own page on applying; the full list below links to our guide to each one.
Grouped by nation. Each name opens our guide to that university.
Most often only when the university is your one UK choice, or for January entry or certain courses. Kent, for example, takes a direct application only from international students who have never used UCAS, and Stirling takes January applications directly.

A direct application makes most sense when the UCAS route has closed or does not fit your plans. If you are an international student, whatever your circumstances, we can help you apply directly to university in the UK.
Neither is better in itself, and the entry requirements are the same. What changes is the timing, the paperwork and how many universities see your application.

You apply on the university’s own website, usually through a form on the course page. It takes four steps, and most forms ask for the same documents.
Check the entry requirements for your country and your English language score.
Use the university’s own form, with your transcripts, English test result, a reference and your passport.
The university writes to you directly. Once you accept, it issues your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.

Yes, at many universities. If your grades are below a university’s requirements, an international foundation year can be the way in. Queen Mary University of London asks for direct applications to its International Foundation Year, and Kent takes foundation applications through its International College website.

Every year I speak to strong students who missed the January deadline, or whose school never registered them with UCAS, and who assume the door has closed. It has not. A direct application to the right university, with the right documents, is a perfectly good way in. Choose universities where your grades sit comfortably, because you apply to one at a time.
Yes, if you are an international student. 50 UK universities accept a direct undergraduate application on their own website, and 24 more accept one in some cases. UK students, and applicants to Oxford, Cambridge and most of the Russell Group, apply through UCAS.
The 50 universities on our list accept a direct application from international undergraduates, including Coventry, Kingston, Oxford Brookes, Hertfordshire, East London, Northumbria, Swansea and Ulster. Each was checked on the university’s own admissions page in September 2026.
Not always. UK students apply through UCAS, and so does anyone applying to Oxford, Cambridge or 20 of the 24 Russell Group universities. International students can apply directly to the 50 universities on our list, and to 24 more in some cases.
You can apply to different universities by different routes, but never to the same university twice. Kent says that submitting an application to both UCAS and its own website will cause issues, and several universities accept a direct application only if you have not used UCAS that year.
No. Oxford says all applicants must apply through UCAS by 15 October, and Cambridge says all applications to UK universities are made through UCAS. Imperial, UCL, LSE and King’s College London also accept undergraduate applications only through UCAS.
At several universities, yes. The University of East London, the University of Kent and the University of Chester all say a direct application costs nothing. Through UCAS you pay one application fee, which covers up to five choices.
At some universities, and it can be the only route. Stirling says applications for January entry must be made directly to the university and not through UCAS. Check the intakes on the course page, because January starts run on some courses and not others.
Neither route is better in itself, and the entry requirements are the same. UCAS gives you up to five choices in one application. A direct application gives you one university at a time, often later in the year, and is often the only route for a January start.
