Exam techniques and exam preparation

Exams are stressful events and trying to stay as calm as possible will help you improve your performance. Below are exam tips to help you do well:

  • Before the exam, make sure you have a good night’s sleep and have eaten food beforehand. This is a key element of exam preparation and will help you feel more relaxed
  • Wake up early on the morning of the exam so you do not have to rush
  • Make sure you understand where the exam venue is located and what time the exam starts
  • Ensure you have everything you need for the exam – ID, stationery or a calculator etc
  • Avoid people who might make you panic or feel stressed before your exam
  • Write your name on the exam paper
  • Read all the questions in the exam and work out how much time you can spend on each question before you start answering them. Allocate slightly more time to answering questions you find challenging
  • Answer the questions you find easiest first
  • Don’t spend more time than you planned on any section unless you have time to spare at the end
  • Answer all the questions and use every minute of the exam to review your answers and amend them accordingly
  • Once you are in the examination room, the most important exam technique is to read the questions carefully and make sure you understand what they are asking from you before you start. You have to answer the right questions or where you have a choice, the best questions for you
  • If you need to, ask the examination invigilator a question. They will determine if they can clarify anything for you
