University of Warwick: what it takes to get in, and why it is in Coventry

What Warwick asks of an applicant, and where the university actually is.

Quick Answer

The University of Warwick does not publish an overall acceptance rate, so any University of Warwick acceptance rate you read online is a third party estimate. What Warwick does publish is demanding: typical offers of A*AA for Economics and Law, A*A*A for Computer Science and 38 or 39 International Baccalaureate points, with international tuition of £27,870 or £35,530 a year for 2026/27 entry.

  • Typical offer: A*AA for Economics and Law, A*A*A for Computer Science and MORSE, AAB for Psychology, AAA for Mechanical Engineering
  • Acceptance rate: not published for the university. Entry standards rank 13th in the UK. Medicine: 23% of applicants received an offer for 2026
  • Known for: economics, business, mathematics, computer science and a single campus on the edge of Coventry. Russell Group
  • Tuition: £27,870 (Law, Politics, humanities) or £35,530 (Economics, Engineering, sciences, Psychology) a year
  • Students: over 28,000 by the end of 2023, about 33% from overseas, from approximately 150 countries
  • Applying: UCAS by 13 January 2027. Economics and Computer Science use the TMUA admissions test

Warwick is the university that international families with an economist, a mathematician or a future banker in the household tend to arrive at quickly, and for good reason. The Complete University Guide 2027 places it 7th in the UK and puts its Accounting and Finance department 2nd in the country, with Economics, Business and Management and General Engineering also in the top ten. It is a member of the Russell Group of 24 research intensive universities, it is one of the youngest names near the top of the table, having been founded in 1965, and about 33% of its students come from overseas. It sits on our guide to the best UK universities for international students as one of the most international campuses in the country.

Two things to know before anything else. Warwick does not publish an acceptance rate for the university, so the confident percentages on the aggregator sites have no source behind them, and this page will not add another. And Warwick is a campus on the edge of Coventry, not in the town of Warwick and not in a city centre, which is either its greatest strength or its one real drawback depending on the student.

What is the University of Warwick acceptance rate?

The University of Warwick does not publish an overall acceptance rate. Warwick keeps an academic statistics dashboard covering applications, offers and acceptances by faculty and fee status, but it sits behind a staff sign in, and we checked on 5 September 2026 that no public version exists. So every percentage you see attributed to Warwick as a whole is a third party estimate, and you should treat it accordingly.

What can be measured is how demanding Warwick is. The Complete University Guide 2027 scores its entry standards at 171 out of 208, which ranks 13th in the UK, against an overall position of 7th. Warwick's own admissions statement explains how it selects: each application is assessed on its merits and in competition with the others for the course, using predicted or achieved grades, the personal statement and the reference, with interviews only where a department says so. Contextual offers for UK applicants can sit up to two A level grades or four International Baccalaureate points below the standard offer. For an international applicant the standard offer is the one that applies.

Warwick does publish one full admissions table, and it is for medicine. Warwick Medical School's MB ChB is a graduate entry degree, and its course information page sets out five years of applications, interviews, offers and places. For 2026 entry there were 1,326 applications, 549 interviews, 311 offers and 203 places, which is an offer rate of 23% and a places to applications ratio of about 15%. Up to 13 of those places each year are for international students. It is the only Warwick acceptance rate with a source behind it, and it applies to one graduate entry course, not to the university.

What is the University of Warwick known for?

The University of Warwick is known for economics, business and the quantitative subjects first, and then for being a young university that reached the top of the UK tables within a few decades of opening. The university's own history pages record that Warwick was approved by the government in 1961, received its Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1965 and took its first 450 undergraduates that October. Warwick Business School dates itself from 1967, and Warwick Medical School says it was established in 2000. Warwick describes itself as almost 60 years old and a member of the Russell Group, the association of 24 major research intensive universities.

The Complete University Guide 2027 places 24 Warwick subjects in the UK top ten. Accounting and Finance is 2nd in the country, and Economics, Business and Management, General Engineering, Creative Writing, Drama, Dance and Cinematics, Communication and Media Studies, Linguistics, French and Iberian Languages are all in the top ten. For an international family the subjects most worth crossing the world for are Economics, the Warwick Business School degrees, Mathematics and its MORSE degree in mathematics, operational research, statistics and economics, and Computer Science.

Internationally the name travels well. QS places Warwick at joint 68th in its World University Rankings 2027, which puts it inside the world top 100. If the name on the certificate matters to your family, Warwick clears that bar. If what you study matters more, its economics and finance departments are among the strongest in the country.

What are the University of Warwick entry requirements for international students?

Warwick publishes a typical offer for every course and a translation of it into national qualifications, and the two together are what you need. Economics BSc asks for A*AA including an A in Mathematics, or 38 International Baccalaureate points with a 6 in higher level Mathematics. Law LLB asks for A*AA or 38 points and does not use the LNAT. Computer Science BSc asks for A*A*A including an A* in Mathematics, or 39 points with 7, 6, 6 at higher level including a 7 in Mathematics, and from 2026/27 it requires the TMUA admissions test. Psychology BSc asks for AAB including a science, or AAA without one. Mechanical Engineering BEng asks for AAA including Mathematics and Physics.

Two admissions tests matter at Warwick. The TMUA, the Test of Mathematics for University Admission, is mandatory for Computer Science and optional for Economics, where the top scorers receive a reduced AAA offer. The MORSE degree accepts a TMUA score of 5.0 or STEP 2 in place of one A level grade. The UCAT applies to medicine only. Warwick's admissions statement adds that a January deadline applicant will have a decision by the UCAS May deadline.

What grades does Warwick ask for in your own qualification?

Warwick publishes a country by country translation of its offers, and the pattern is consistent: A*A*A, A*AA and AAA each have a fixed equivalent in your system. The table below is read from Warwick's international qualifications pages for the countries our applicants come from most often. Where your country is not here, Warwick publishes it, and so can we.

Where is the University of Warwick, and is it a campus university?

The University of Warwick is on the southern edge of Coventry, on a 710 acre campus which the university's own historical note describes as straddling the boundary between the City of Coventry and the County of Warwickshire. Its address is Coventry CV4 7AL. It is not in the town of Warwick, which is a separate place some miles to the south, and the name catches out a good number of applicants and their parents.

It is a campus university in the fullest sense. Teaching, the library, the Students' Union, the Arts Centre, the sports facilities and most of the halls sit inside one boundary, and a first year international student can walk to everything. Coventry is a city of its own with the shops, the railway station and the nightlife a bus ride away, and Birmingham is the nearest large city. The campus is what you get, and for a student arriving from abroad in September that is a considerable comfort.

Can an international student study medicine at Warwick?

Yes, but only as a graduate. Warwick Medical School's MB ChB is a four year graduate entry degree, which Warwick describes as the UK's largest graduate entry course, and it requires a 2:1 honours degree or the overseas equivalent in any subject, the UCAT admissions test, at least 70 hours of relevant healthcare or social care experience and a multiple mini interview. Warwick's undergraduate course search returns no medicine degree because there is no school leaver route. For 2026 entry the UCAT scores that secured an interview ranged from 1,910 to 2,610 with an average of 2,080, and Warwick states that up to 13 international places are available each year. The UCAS deadline for medicine is 15 October, three months before the main deadline. The international fee is £32,510 for year one and £56,660 for each of years two to four.

What does Warwick ask for a masters?

Warwick sets its taught masters requirements department by department, and the translation of a 2:1 into your own degree system is the part most applicants need. For India, Warwick sorts institutions into three categories: graduates of the IITs, IIMs, NITs and the leading universities need 65% for a first, 60% for a 2:1 and 58% for a 2:2; graduates of state and central universities need 75% for a first and 65% for a 2:1; and graduates of private and deemed universities need 80% for a first and 70% for a 2:1. For China, Warwick uses a four tier list of universities, with a minimum of 70% for a 2:1 from a tier one university, 75% from tier two, 80% from tier three and 88% from tier four, assessed individually.

Warwick's international finance page puts the living cost budget for a one year masters at approximately £13,632 for a full year, and the tuition fee is set course by course, so add the fee for your programme to that figure. Warwick Business School, the Economics department and the Mathematics Institute are the destinations most of our postgraduate applicants ask about, and each publishes its own requirements. Our page on how to study in the UK covers the postgraduate route from first enquiry to arrival, and our guide to studying in the UK covers what every university here has in common.

How much does the University of Warwick cost for international students?

Warwick publishes its overseas undergraduate fees for 2026/27 in two bands. Band 1, at £27,870 a year, covers Law, Politics and International Studies, History, English Literature, Philosophy, Sociology, Classics and Modern Languages. Band 2, at £35,530 a year, covers Accounting and Finance, Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Psychology and Engineering. Medicine is separate, at £32,510 for year one and £56,660 for each later year. Warwick states that continuing students may see an inflationary uplift each year, so plan on the 2026/27 figure plus an increase.

Warwick's undergraduate halls are let for 40 to 44 weeks and its named halls include Arthur Vick, Bluebell, Claycroft, Cryfield, Heronbank, Jack Martin, Lakeside, Rootes, Sherbourne, Tocil and Westwood.

Adding a mid priced hall at about £8,000 for the year to the tuition gives about £35,900 for a first year of Law and about £43,500 for a first year of Economics, before flights, books and a life. Coventry is not London, and our cost of living page has the comparison. If the Band 2 fee is the sticking point, the cheapest universities in the UK page is the honest next read.

Scholarships for international students at Warwick

The one to know about is the Warwick Undergraduate Global Excellence Scholarship. It is open to self funded overseas fee status applicants on any undergraduate course including the foundation programmes, with medicine the one exclusion, and it is awarded on the strength of an application rather than automatically. Warwick publishes what it gave in 2025: 6 full fee scholarships, 148 half fee, 103 covering a quarter of the fee and 6 awards of £2,000, which is 263 awards in one year. For the 2026 round Warwick asked for the UCAS application by 14 January, the scholarship application by 27 February, and told applicants of the outcome on 27 May, so the 2027 dates will fall in the same weeks. For taught masters students from France, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Nigeria and Turkey, Warwick offered GREAT Scholarships worth £15,000 off tuition in 2026.

What English language level does the University of Warwick require?

Warwick sorts its courses into three English language bands. Band A is IELTS 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component, Band B is 6.5 with 6.0 in each, and Band C is 7.0 with 6.5 in each, and every course page says which band applies. Warwick publishes equivalents for TOEFL, Pearson PTE Academic and the Duolingo English Test, and runs pre-sessional English for applicants a little below the line. Check your course page for its band before you book a test.

What is Warwick like as a place to live?

Warwick is a large, busy, self contained campus with the feel of a small town, and a very international one: about 33% of its students come from overseas, from approximately 150 countries, which is a very high proportion and means an arriving student is never the only foreigner in the room. The university's own history pages record over 28,000 students by the end of 2023, of whom over 9,000 were postgraduates. The Arts Centre, the Students' Union with its piazza, the lake and the sports facilities are all on site.

It is not a city. Coventry is a bus ride away and is a working city rather than a picture postcard one, Birmingham is the nearest large city, and London is a train journey. Students who want a capital on the doorstep find that limiting and should look at the London universities on our guide. Students who want a full campus life, a short walk to a 9am lecture and a cohort from every continent tend to find Warwick close to ideal, and they are usually the students who thrive there.

Dr Elizabeth Adey

Elizabeth's view

Warwick is the university I raise most often with families who have Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and Imperial on their list and nothing else. For an economist or a mathematician it belongs in that conversation, and its offers are set high, so it is not a fallback: a student who is realistic for LSE is realistic for Warwick, and a student who is not will find A*AA just as hard here. What I ask families to be clear eyed about is the setting. Warwick is a campus outside a provincial city, and a student who chose LSE for London will not find London in Coventry. The students of ours who have gone to Warwick and been happiest were the ones who wanted the work, the international cohort and a proper campus, and who were content for the city to be somewhere they visited. If that describes your son or daughter, it is one of the two or three best choices in the country for the quantitative subjects.

Frequently asked questions about the University of Warwick

Is Warwick University in the Russell Group?

Yes. The University of Warwick describes itself as a member of the Russell Group, the association of 24 major research intensive UK universities. It is one of the youngest members, founded in 1965, and it sits 7th in the Complete University Guide 2027, above most of the older ones.

How many students are at Warwick University?

The university's own history pages record over 28,000 students by the end of 2023, of whom over 9,000 were postgraduates. About 33% come from overseas, from approximately 150 countries, which makes Warwick a very international campus by any British standard.

Is Warwick University good?

By every published measure, yes. It is 7th in the UK in the Complete University Guide 2027 with 24 subjects in the top ten and Accounting and Finance 2nd in the country, and joint 68th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Its entry standards rank 13th in the UK, so the offers match the reputation.

What county is the University of Warwick in?

The campus sits on the boundary between the city of Coventry, in the West Midlands, and the county of Warwickshire, and its postal address is Coventry CV4 7AL. It is not in the town of Warwick, which lies some miles to the south.

The one number Warwick publishes that matters more than any estimated acceptance rate

Its entry standards rank 13th in the UK while the university ranks 7th, in the Complete University Guide 2027. Read together with its offers of A*AA and A*A*A, that means Warwick is not the softer option on a list of famous names: its entry standards sit inside the top fifteen in the country and its standard offers for its best known courses are A*AA and A*A*A.

How far is the University of Warwick from London?

Warwick is on the edge of Coventry in the West Midlands, so London is a train journey from Coventry station rather than a commute, and Birmingham is the nearest large city. A student who needs the capital on the doorstep should compare Warwick with the London universities on our guide before applying.

Is Warwick a target university?

Its published rankings suggest so: Accounting and Finance 2nd in the UK and Economics and Business and Management in the top ten, in the Complete University Guide 2027, alongside a top 100 QS world ranking. Warwick itself publishes no recruiter list, and we do not invent one, so treat any named list of firms elsewhere as unsourced.

Is Warwick a red brick university?

No. The red brick universities are the civic universities of the industrial cities founded before the First World War. Warwick was founded in 1965 and is one of the campus universities of that decade, which is also why almost all of its buildings are modern and why the whole university sits on one site.

Is Warwick University prestigious?

Yes, in the UK and increasingly abroad. It is a Russell Group university ranked 7th in the Complete University Guide 2027 and joint 68th in the world by QS in its 2027 rankings, and its offers of A*AA to A*A*A for its best known courses are among the highest in the country.

The next step

If Warwick is on your list, the useful next move is to find your course page, read the typical offer and the fee band, and decide whether the TMUA is worth sitting, then compare it honestly with the alternatives. The top business schools in the UK and the best engineering universities in the UK both name Warwick and its rivals. For a collegiate alternative in the north that also carries a published acceptance rate, see Durham University; for another top ten campus university outside the Russell Group, Loughborough University; for a northern Russell Group city university, the University of Sheffield; and if London itself is the point, Imperial College London for the sciences. The visa rules are on our Student visa page. We are not a visa agency: we set out the published rules, point you at GOV.UK, and work with partners we pass people to where an application needs professional handling.
