Anglia Ruskin University teaches on two main campuses, in Cambridge and in Chelmsford, with smaller sites at Peterborough, Writtle and London. It traces its line back to the Cambridge School of Art of 1858 and takes its present name from the art critic John Ruskin, who opened that school. It became a university in 1992 and absorbed the land-based Writtle University College in 2024.

The campus

Campuses at East Road in Cambridge and Bishop Hall Lane in Chelmsford, with further sites at Peterborough, Writtle and London.

What "university since" means here

Designated a university under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, initially as Anglia Polytechnic University; later renamed Anglia Ruskin University

Worth knowing

Writtle University College merged into Anglia Ruskin University on 29 February 2024 and now operates as the ARU Writtle campus. Writtle should not be pinned separately.

Sources disagree about who founded the Cambridge School of Art: Wikipedia names William John Beamont, while ARU's own history page credits John Ruskin. Both agree on the year 1858, which is what origin_year records. The 2005 date sometimes given for the renaming to Anglia Ruskin University could not be confirmed from a second source and is therefore not asserted.

Aston University occupies one enclosed campus of about 60 acres in the middle of Birmingham, a few minutes' walk from the main railway station and the city's business district. It grew out of a municipal technical school of 1895 and became a university by royal charter in 1966, one of the former colleges of advanced technology. It is strongly vocational, with a well-established four-year placement model and teaching concentrated on engineering, business, pharmacy, optometry and the health sciences.

The campus

Neither could be confirmed from BPP's own website, which says only '48 years of shaping the brightest talent'.

Sheffield Hallam University is one of the largest universities in England, with a City Campus immediately beside Sheffield railway station and a second campus at Collegiate Crescent. It dates its founding to the Sheffield School of Design of 1843, opened as the city's steel, tool and cutlery trades were expanding, and it became a university in 1992. Trinity Laban is a conservatoire for music and dance in south-east London, formed in 2005 by the merger of Trinity College of Music and the Laban dance centre. Music students are taught in King Charles Court, part of the Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich, and dance students in the purpose-built Laban Building at Deptford. It was the first higher education institution in the UK to combine music and dance in one conservatoire.

The campus

Music is taught at King Charles Court in the Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich; dance is taught at the Laban Building in Deptford, with further space at New Cross.

University College Birmingham is a small city-centre institution specialising in hospitality, culinary arts, tourism, business and childhood studies, with strongly vocational teaching and its own training restaurants and salons. It grew out of Birmingham's municipal technical and catering colleges and became University College Birmingham in 2007, when it gained the right to award its own taught degrees. Full university status followed in December 2012, although it kept the words University College in its name.

Sources disagree on the founding year

University College Birmingham's own history page traces the institution to nineteenth-century cookery instruction at the Birmingham Municipal Technical School and names the Central Technical College from 1927 as its first distinct identity. Wikipedia instead dates the separate institution to 1957, when the College of Bakery, Catering, Domestic Science and Associated Studies was created under Birmingham City Council. The client's source data carries 1957.

Sources disagree on the earliest continuous predecessor. The University of Exeter's own history says its journey began with the Exeter School of Art founded in 1855 by Sir Stafford Northcote. Wikipedia lists an earlier constituent, St Luke's College, founded in 1838 as the Exeter Diocesan Training College, which merged into the university in 1978 and gives its name to the present St Luke's campus. Values in play: 1855 (Exeter School of Art) and 1838 (Exeter Diocesan Training College, later St Luke's College).

The University of South Wales is a multi-campus institution in the south Wales valleys and coastal cities, with its largest site at Treforest near Pontypridd and further campuses in Newport, Cardiff and Merthyr Tydfil. It was created in 2013 when the University of Glamorgan merged with the University of Wales, Newport, bringing together lineages that run back to mining, mechanics' and teacher training institutes of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is one of the larger universities in Wales and teaches subjects from aircraft maintenance and policing to creative industries.

The campus

What "university since" means here

The continuing institution took university title in 1992 as the University of Glamorgan, under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992; it was renamed the University of South Wales on 11 April 2013 when it merged with the University of Wales, Newport, which had itself held university title since 2004

Sources disagree on the founding year

The two merged lineages give different earliest predecessors. Through the University of Glamorgan the earliest predecessor is the South Wales and Monmouthshire School of Mines, founded at Treforest in 1913. Through the University of Wales, Newport the earliest predecessor is the Newport Mechanics' Institute of 1841. Wikipedia treats 1841 as the earliest continuous predecessor; the university's own history page names the School of Mines Treforest, Monmouthshire School of Mines and Caerleon College without giving dates.

Worth knowing

Formed on 11 April 2013 by the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport. The legal entity continues that of the University of Glamorgan under a new name.

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David teaches across west and south Wales, with its oldest campus at Lampeter in rural Ceredigion and larger sites at Carmarthen and Swansea. Lampeter was founded in 1822 as St David's College to educate Welsh clergy and holds the oldest royal charter in Wales and England after Oxford and Cambridge, granted in 1828. The present university was created in 2010 when Lampeter merged with Trinity University College Carmarthen under a supplementary charter.

What "university since" means here

Formed in 2010 by a supplementary royal charter to Lampeter's charter of 1828, merging the University of Wales Lampeter with Trinity University College Carmarthen; the university's own account gives 18 November 2010 and Wikipedia gives July 2010

Worth knowing

Formerly a constituent institution of the federal University of Wales. It holds the 1828 Lampeter royal charter as amended by the 2010 supplementary charter.

The two sources give different months for the 2010 merger: UWTSD's own history page says 18 November 2010, Wikipedia says July 2010. Both agree on the year. The 1822 in the client's source data is correct for the founding of St David's College but is not the year university title was acquired.

Worth knowing

The trading name is Ulster University; the legal name remains University of Ulster.

Neither the 1984 charter nor the 1865 Magee foundation could be confirmed from the university's own website, whose About pages describe only its current campuses. The 1984 merger is corroborated independently by Encyclopaedia Britannica, but by no institutional or official record. The three-campus description is taken from Ulster's own About page.
