Revision Skills

20th May 2021 By Dr Elizabeth Adey Leave a Comment

As we move into exam season, the key to success during this stressful period in your studies, is to ensure you have the revision skills needed to make sure you avoid the dreaded ‘cramming’ and last minute panic. Here are some top tips to navigating your way through this period with success:

Revision skills – Timing

You will be given your exam schedule a long way in advance so make sure that you take advantage of this and plan your revision ahead. Arrange your own revision schedule with a timetable of study periods that work around your other commitments is one of the main revision skills you should embrace. If you start this way, you won’t over commit yourself to long periods of revision. Little and often will help you concentrate and enable you to get the most out of your time.

Revision skills – Be Realistic

As with the above, achieving the best possible results is all about planning, but be realistic about what you can achieve in the allotted timeframe. Focus on revising one subject area at a time so that you can process the information properly. Once you have found a revision method that works for you, repeat the same structure for each subject area so that you have a clear and efficient method to your study.

Revision skills – Think about Your Environment

Ensuring you have a functional work space that is free from distraction and noise is vital. The optimum environment for revision will vary from person to person, but ensuring that you are comfortable and have access to natural light is a good place to start.

Revision skills – Use Visual Aids

For many students who are wondering how to revise, diagrams and visual aids are some of the top revision skills to condense information and make it easy to prompt or recall what you have learnt. Many people choose to use revision flash cards. The actual process of creating them and selecting the key points is a great way to initiate the learning process. They can then be used as an effective method of self-testing.

Get Some Sleep!

Research has shown that rest and sleep has a huge impact on our ability to retain information. So the good news is not all about hard work. A good night’s sleep and rest during the exam period is essential. Not only will a rested body and mind help you to concentrate during long periods sitting in the exam hall, it will also give your memory the boost it needs during this challenging period of your studies.
