What to look out for before you apply to university?

29th January 2018 By Dr Elizabeth Adey

What statistics and information should you look at before you decide what university and degree course to apply to?

Our top tips are outlined below:

1. Look at student satisfaction and employability statistics

What did previous students think of the course? How many graduates are employed after 6 months? The UNISTATS website allows you to review and compare a range of statistics including student satisfaction levels with the overall course and graduate employability, including type of roles graduates go into and the mean salary.

2. How many students progress from the first to the second year of a course or do many drop out?

The UNISTATS website also allows you to review the percentage of students who continue on to the second year of their degree course.

3. Degree classification levels

The UNISTATS website can even review degree pass rates. They do vary amongst institutions and courses.

4. Quality of teaching and world ranking of a university

Some universities have very strong reputations for the research that is undertaken in their departments. Others may be well known for having high standards of teaching. The quality of teaching and care students receive is obviously reflected in overall student satisfaction levels, however, it is also worth reviewing the results of the Teaching Excellence Framework to see if the university you want to apply to is listed and if they were rewarded; gold, silver or bronze.

5. Reputation and ranking of a degree course and university in the UK

In addition to the world ranking of a university, find out through the links below how your course ranks compared to other degree courses in that subject area:
